Bill Dowling |
Captain Dowling was a retired member of the Houston Fire Department. He had worked out of Fire Station 68. He had 17 years of service.
He was known as Bill to his family and friends. He was known as "Iron Bill" to many citizens of Houston because of his fortitude and tenacity.
Just after noon on May 31, 2013, Bill and numerous other firefighters responded to a fire at the Southwest Inn in Houston. A motel, restaurant and sports bar were part of the structure.
Tragically, four Houston Firefighters were killed when a roof collapsed on them. More than a dozen other firefighters were injured, some extremely seriously.
Bill was one of those seriously injured. He lost both of his legs. He lost the ability to speak. He suffered from brain damage.
Bill was retired the day after the tragedy and continued to fight for survival from then

Tragically, Bill passed away from complications resulting from his injuries. His passing is considered to be in the line of duty.
Bill began his firefighting career in 2000. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.
The members of the Houston Fire Department are in mourning over the death of their brother. Bill was a hero whose services to Houston will never be forgotten.
Bill's loved ones are devastated over his death. He was incredibly brave. He did his best. He will be forever mourned.
Bill is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his wife, Jacki and three children - Faith, Forrest and Foster.
