Rod Lucas - Fresno County Sheriff's Office - California

Sergeant Rod Lucas, age 46, died while on duty on October 31, 2016, at a hospital in Fresno, California.

Sergeant Lucas was a member of the Fresno County Sheriff's Office. He had 20 years of service.

Rod and other members of the Department were at the Sheriff's Office building near the Fresno Airport. A discussion ensued about how they carried their backup weapons. Accidentally, one weapon discharged, striking Rod in the chest.

Rod was rushed to a local hospital where, tragically, he was pronounced deceased.

Rod grew up in Tranquillity which is a town of under 800 in Fresno County. He played football at the town's high school and was highly regarded by his peers.

Rod began his career with the Sheriff's Office in 1996. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2008. He worked various assignments including patrol, the Chaplaincy Program and in the Narcotics Division.

Friends describe Rod as a man of faith. He had a positive energy and a kind spirit. 

The members of the Fresno County Sheriff's Office are in mourning over the death of their brother. Rod was a professional and was well-respected by his comrades. He will be forever remembered.

Rod's loved ones are devastated over his sudden and tragic death. He was loving and was loved in return. He did his best. He will be forever mourned.

Rod is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his wife and four children.

Thank you for your service to the community, Rod. 

Pray for all who die by misadventure. They are with us one moment and are gone before we can say goodbye.

Pray that Rod is in Heaven. Pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
