Jack Hopkins - Deputy Sheriff Fatality - Modoc County, California

Deputy Sheriff Jack Hopkins, age 31, died in the line of duty on October 19, 2016, in Modoc County, California.

Deputy Sheriff Hopkins was a member of the Modoc County Sheriff's Office, based in Alturas, California. He had one year of service. He had previously served with the Alturas Police Department.

Modoc County is located in north-eastern California and has a population of under 10,000. 

At about 10:30 a.m., Jack had responded to a family disturbance call at a rural location outside of Alturas. When he arrived on scene he was shot and killed by a male suspect. 

The shooter, Jack Lee Breiner, age 47, was wounded and taken into custody shortly thereafter. He is reportedly listed on the California Sex Offenders Registry.  

Jack was raised in Montague and graduated from Yreka High School.

The Modoc County Sheriff's Office is in mourning over the death of their brother. Jack was a dedicated law enforcement officer. He was talented, caring, upbeat and kind spirited. He did his part. He will be forever remembered.

Jack's loved ones are devastated over his sudden and tragic death. He did his best. He will be forever mourned.

Jack is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members who will forever miss him.

Pray for all who die in the line of duty.
