Amiyah Dunston - a 9 year old killed by a Pit Bull dog in New York State

Amiyah
Amiyah Dunston, age 9, of Baldwin, New York, died on November 8, 2015, at a hospital in Valley Stream, New York.

At about 10:30 a.m., Amiyah was visiting her biological father and was playing with two other young girls in the backyard of a house on Holland Avenue in Elmont, New York.

Elmont is an unincorporated census-designated place in Nassau County, not far from New York City.

While playing, Amiyah was attacked by a pit bull. The dog grabbed Amiyah's neck and shook her. A woman in the house tried to pull the dog off of the girl but could not.

The police arrived and the dog attacked them as well. An officer shot and killed the dog.

The dog belonged to the occupants of the house.

Amiyah was rushed to a nearby hospital where, tragically, she succumbed to her wounds despite the valiant efforts of surgeons to save her.

A funding site has been established to help the family with expenses.

Pit Bulls were bred over 200 years ago for bull baiting, bear baiting and dog fighting.

They were never intended to be family pets. They should never be around infants or young children under any circumstances. They have repeatedly proven that they can kill people, both young and old, including people passing by. They have killed grown women walking in the hallways of their apartment buildings; they have killed 40 year old men jogging by on a country road; they have killed toddlers playing on the floor.

Many towns and cities, counties and states do not allow pit bulls and related breeds within their jurisdictions. Pit bulls are banned outright in many European countries, period.

Where are the authorities in Nassau County, New York? Why do you allow Pit Bull

dogs in your jurisdiction? Wake up.

Pit Bulls and all related dog breeds should be bred out of existence sooner rather than later.

Death by dog is not acceptable in a civilized country.

Amiyah's loved ones are devastated over her sudden and tragic death. She is described as an angel. She was such a good kid and was beautiful and intelligent. She greatly loved her family and she was greatly loved in return. She will be forever mourned.

Amiyah is survived by many loving family members including her mother, Mayra, and her partner, Brian.

Amiyah's loved ones have suffered an unspeakable loss. Pray for them.

Amiyah is playing in the fields of Heaven.
