Southwest Airlines staff prevented a woman from phoning her suicidal husband

Andrew Evers
Andrew Evers, age 52, died on April 3, 2015, at his home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Andrew committed suicide.

He was known as Andy to his family and friends.

On April 3, 2015, his wife, Karen Momsen-Evers was on a flight from New Orleans back to her home in Milwaukee. She had been holidaying on a girl's weekend with friends.

As the plane was commencing the flight, Karen received a text message from Andy stating "Karen, please forgive me for what I am about to do, I am going to kill myself."

Karen panicked and texted him back "No". When she tried to call him, a flight attendant "slapped the phone down" and told her to put it on airplane mode.

She explained what was happening at home but the flight attendant stated that federal aviation regulations prevented all cell phone calls.

When the plane reached cruising altitude, Karen asked another flight attendant if she could phone her husband and she was again told no.

Karen cried in her seat during the entire two-hour flight. When the plane finally landed in Milwaukee, she called the police and rushed home to find that her husband
had committed suicide.

Southwest Airlines stated: We are extremely saddened to learn of Mrs. Evers’ loss, and the Southwest Family extends our deepest condolences.

Flight attendants are supposed to notify the pilots when there is a passenger emergency. However, the Southwest pilots on this flight were not told of Karen's emergency.

An exception could have been made in this case and Karen should have been able to make a call or the pilots could have radioed the nearest control tower to have them contact the Milwaukee Police to go to Andy's home quickly.

Karen has stated that she hopes that other passengers never have to suffer like this again.

Andy is survived by many loving friends and family members who will forever mourn him.

Pray for Andy. Pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.

God save us from those who turn their faces away from our suffering. Amen.
