Steven Ackerman - Firefighter Fatality - South Dakota

Firefighter Steven Ackerman, age 38, died in the line of duty on April 12, 2015, in Brandon, South Dakota.

Firefighter Ackerman was a volunteer member of Valley Springs Fire and Rescue.  He had over 13 years of service with the Department.

After 10 p.m., Steven and other firefighters responded to a residential house fire in Brandon. Soon after fire crews arrived on the scene, the homeowner, David Smith, age 47, was rushed to a hospital in Sioux Falls where tragically he passed away from his injuries. 

About 10:40 p.m., firefighters were ordered to evacuate the home because of deteriorating conditions. About 20 minutes later, all of the firefighters were accounted for except for Steven Ackerman.

Firefighters found the missing firefighter's body in the basement of the home about 1:30 a.m. the next day. It is believed that he may have fallen to the basement when the floor gave way. The incident is under investigation.

Valley Springs Fire and Rescue is in mourning over the death of their brother. He was a brave and committed firefighter who put himself in harm's way in the performance of his duties. He will be forever remembered.

Friends stated that Steve was always willing to help. He had a generous spirit, a huge heart and a sense of humor.

Steven's loved ones are devastated over his sudden and tragic death. He did his best. He will be forever mourned.

Steven is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members who will forever miss him.
