Jonathan Wynkoop - U.S. Army Fatality

Jonathan Wynkoop
Captain Jonathan F. Wynkoop, age 27, of Maumee, Ohio, died on March 31, 2015, at Fort Bliss, Texas.

Capt. Wynkoop was based at Fort Bliss. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery Regiment, Division Artillery, 1st Armored Division.

Jonathan was participating in a training exercise but was temporarily off duty and was asleep on his cot. At about 5:00 a.m. a military vehicle backed over his sleeping area and injured him fatally. He was resuscitated but tragically he passed away at the scene.

The accident is under investigation.

Jonathan attended Springfield High School in Holland, Ohio.  He later attended Bowling Green State University in Ohio and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army on February 10, 2011. He arrived at Fort Bliss in 2011 and was deployed to Afghanistan in 2013. 

Jonathan's awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, Air Reserve Forces Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Military Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Air Force Training Ribbon, NATO Medal, and the Combat Action Badge.

A gofundme account has been set up to help Jonathan's family with expenses.

Jonathan's military comrades are in mourning over his death. Military officials describe him as an impressive and capable leader. He could be counted upon under any circumstances. He was a hard worker and had a future in the Army. He will be forever remembered.

Jonathan is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his wife and three children.
