Girard Gass Jr. - U.S. Military

Staff Sgt. Girard D. Gass Jr., age 33, of Lumber Bridge, North Carolina, died on August 3, 2014, in Jalalabad Air Field Hospital, Afghanistan, from a non-combat related incident while on patrol in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan.

The cause of his death is under investigation. 

He was assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. 

Girard enlisted in the Army in August of 2008. He joined the 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) as a Special Forces medical sergeant in August of 2011.

This was his second deployment to Afghanistan.  During his career he received numerous awards and decorations and was posthumously awarded his second Bronze Star Medal and Meritorious Service Medal. 

Military officials describe Girard as an exceptional Green Beret, noncommissioned officer and human being who loved his family, team, country and job with everything he had.  His comrades are proud to have served with him.  He will be forever remembered.

Girard's family members are devastated by his sudden and tragic death. He will be forever mourned.

Girard is survived by many loving comrades, friends and relatives.

Thank you for serving, Girard.

Pray without ceasing unto God for an end to this war in Afghanistan. It is enough. We are sick with grief for men like Girard. He wouldn't have died there, if there was no war there.

Pray that Girard is in heaven. Pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
