James Chaffin III - U.S. Military

James Chaffin III
Capt. James E. Chaffin III, 27, of West Columbia, South Carolina, died on April 1, 2014, in Kandahar, Afghanistan, of a non-combat related incident.

The incident is under investigation.

James was known as Ed to many of his comrades and friends.

James was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 319th Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

He attended Brookland-Cayce High School in Cayce, where he played football.

James was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in May of 2009, from the U.S. Military

Academy at West Point, New York. He deployed to Iraq with his unit in May of 2011. He then transferred to the 1st Brigade Combat Team in August of 2013.

Military officials describe James as an exceptional and valued officer. He had a great work ethic. He will never be forgotten.

Friends describe him as caring, intelligent, humorous and patriotic.

His family is devastated by his sudden death. He will be forever mourned.

James is survived by many loving friends and family members.

Thank you for serving, James.

Pray for all who die in the service of their country.

Pray that James is in heaven. Pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
