Charles Johnson - Law Enforcement - North Carolina

Police Officer Charles Johnson, age 46, died on April 15, 2014, on a highway just outside of Tarboro, North Carolina.

Officer Johnson was a member of the Tarboro Police Department. He had 24 years of service. He was a patrol officer.

Charles was off duty just before 9:00 a.m. and was driving west on Highway 111, just outside of Tarboro, when his vehicle was struck by the arm of an excavator. The arm of the excavator crossed the center line hitting Charles' vehicle on the driver's side pinning Charles. He died at the scene.

The excavator was driven by an employee of the North Carolina Department of Transport. William Allen Harrell ll, of Macclesfield, age 29, may have charges filed against him.

The Tarboro Police Department is in mourning over the death of their brother.

Charles was well known and well liked in his community. His nick-name was
Michael, Archangel, Patron

Robocop. He was always tall and stood up straight and his uniform was always in order. He seemed stern on the surface but he had a caring side to him.

He had spent his entire career in the service of Tarboro.

Police Department officials stated that Charles had a passion for life and will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, a trust fund has been setup at Providence Bank, 325 N. Main St. (PO Box 339) Tarboro, NC. All donations will go to Charles' wife and two children.

Charles is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his mother, Charlotte Armstrong; his wife, Tracy Johnson and his sons, Travis and Dustin.

Thank you for your service to the public, Charles.

Pray for all who die by misadventure. They are with us one moment and gone the next.

Pray that Charles is in heaven. Pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
