Officer David Harris, age 42, died on March 14, 2014, on a street in Chicago.

David was a member of the Chicago Police Department. He was a member of a special team assigned to trouble spots on Chicago's South Side. He had 10 1/2 years of service with the Chicago Department.  He had previously worked with the Maywood Police Department from 1997 to 2003.  

Officer Harris was off duty and driving home just before 1:00 a.m., after completion of his late shift, when a van plowed into his vehicle and pushed it against a light pole, crushing it. Officer Harris died at the scene of the collision. 

The van was being pursued by an officer of the Calumet Park Police Department. The 31 year old female driver was injured in the crash.  Several bags of grass were found in her vehicle. She has no driver's license and has been stopped numerous times in the past for speeding and disregarding traffic signals.  She also has a history of retail theft and shoplifting. 

The circumstances of the police chase are under investigation.

The Chicago Police Department is in mourning over the death of their brother.

Officer Harris had earned 87 department awards, including two commendations, a joint operations award and a unit meritorious performance award during his time with the Department.

Police comrades at the Maywood Police Department stated that David was one their best men.  He had potential.  He is also described as a man of faith, who took his job seriously.

Friends stated that he was helpful, hard-working, well-liked, a good man and a good father. 

David's family are devastated by his tragic and senseless death. He will be forever mourned. 

David is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his wife and his two young sons.

Pray for all who die by misadventure. They are with us one moment and gone the next.

Pray that David is in heaven. Pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
