Peggy Sylvester - Law Enforcement - Louisiana

Assistant Warden Peggy Sylvester, age 50, died in the line of duty on April 14, 2013, on a highway in Louisiana.

Peggy was a member of the Opelousas Police Department, Louisiana. She had 3 years of service with that Department. Previously she had served with the Eunice Police Department for one year and St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office for 10 years.

Peggy was in a department vehicle heading to work at about 4:45 a.m. and was attempting to pass another vehicle during a period of rain when her vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. She was not wearing a seatbelt at the time. She suffered fatal injuries.

Peggy served as a jailer with the Department, responsible for booking inmates, ensuring they were fed and many other related duties.

Police Officials stated that Peggy was firm and committed to what her responsibilities were and that was being around inmates and making sure that they knew she was the boss.

It was also stated that although she was small in stature she was well respected by
