Richard Helms - Good Samaritan - killed on a highway in Pennsylvania

Richard Helms, age 60, of Cincinnati, Ohio, died on a highway in Macungie Township, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania.

He was driving back to Ohio from a Christmas visit to relatives in Massachusetts.

Richard had pulled his vehicle off to the shoulder of Interstate 78 around 9:44 p.m. in a freezing rainstorm and walked onto a travel lane to check on a vehicle that had been disabled from a previous crash. An approaching vehicle began to spin out of control and crashed into Richard Helms, fatally injuring him.

He died a short time later at a local hospital.

Saint Francis of Assisi,
pray for Rick
He was known as Rick to his family and friends. Richard was a maintenance man at a Cincinnati housing complex.

Family members state that Rick was friendly to strangers and was always helping others. The remodelling business he ran in Florida failed, so he moved to Cincinnati to find work. He often helped the homeless men who hung out around the apartment complex where he worked.

Rick is survived by many loving friends and relatives including his wife, Pat Helms; his brother, Paul Helms; his daughter, Kira and his grandson, Ben (age 2).

Pray for those who die while coming to the aid of others. Amen.

Let us pray that Richard Helms is in heaven. Let us pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
