Herbert Johnson - Firefighter - Illinois

Captain Herbert Johnson, age 54, died in the line of duty on November 2, 2012, in Chicago, Illinois.

Herbert was a member of the Chicago Fire Department. He had 32 years of service.

He was attending a fire at a house in Gage Park. He suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns. There was a flashover and Herbert went into cardiac arrest because the intense heat of the flashover blocked his airways.  Paradmedics performed CPR on him at the scene. He was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he died.

Herbert was known as Herbie to his friends and comrades.

The Mayor of Chicago stated "He touched everybody that ran into contact with him. He was a larger than life person."

Fire Department officials describe him as a great guy and a great fireman. He was among a group of Chicago firefighters who responded to New York City in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks.
Saint Florian, Patron
Saint of Firefighters,
pray for Herbert

Comrades describe him as the best guy, always laughing, always having a smile on his face.

Herbert is survived by many loving friends and relatives including his wife, Susan; 1 daughter; and 2 sons - one at college and one in the Marine Corps. He is also survived by three brothers who are Chicago police officers, a sister who is a retired Chicago cop, and a brother who is a Chicago firefighter.

Thank you for serving, Herbert.

Pray for all who die in the line of duty.

Let us pray that Herbert Johnson is in heaven. Let us pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
