Siddhanta Kunwar

British soldier Siddhanta Kunwar, age 28, died on October 30, 2012, while on patrol in the Nahr-e Saraj District of Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

He was participating in a meeting with Afghan Uniform Policemen, when he was shot and killed by a man wearing an Afghan police uniform who had been attending the meeting.

He was a member of the 1st Battalion, The Royal Gurkha Rifles attached to the Royal Marines - 40 Commando.

Siddhanta Kunwar deployed to Afghanistan on October 3, 2012. He was on his third operational tour of Afghanistan.

He was born in Pokhara, Nepal, where he lived with his mother and father. He passed the arduous selection for the Brigade of Gurkhas on 17 December 2004 and having completed his year-long infantry training joined 1st Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles in October 2005.

He deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina in 2005-2006. He also served in Brunei where he conducted extensive jungle training and qualified as a sniper in 2007.

Military officials describe Siddhanta as an outstanding soldier and a true Gurkha. He had a calm good humour, sharp mind and a huge amount of operational experience.

Family members stated that they are proud of him and of his service. He will be forever missed.

Siddhanta is survived by many loving friends and relatives including his his mother, Krishna Maya Kunwar, his father, Shyam Kumar Kunwar, stepmother Chhali Devi Kunwar, his four sisters; Shova, Shyandya, Smita and Sardha Kunwar and his elder brother Bhupendra Kunwar.
