Jessie Streich-Kest, age 24, and Jacob Vogelman, age 23, died on October 29, 2012, in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn, New York.

Jessie
They went walking their dog, believing that the worst of the storms from Hurricane Sandy were over.

As they were walking, a tree in the park toppled, killing them. Their bodies were not found until the morning of the next day. The dog survived.

Jessie Streich-Kest grew up in the Prospect Park South area of Brooklyn and was a teaching fellow who had just started teaching at the Bushwick School for Social Justice. Friends said she had been relieved to get through her first parents' evening at the high school last week.

She was also an activist who campaigned to stop abuse of the carriage horses in Central Park, following in the footsteps of her father, Jon, who is a prominent Union figure. She attended the 2008 inauguration of President Obama in Washington.

Friends stated that Jessie had a passion for animal welfare, political activism, and her new career as a high school teacher. She is described as having strength of character.

Her family stated that Jessie left a lasting impression on all who met her. She loved life and was deeply devoted to social justice.
