Sgt. 1st Class Matthew B. Thomas, age 30, of Travelers Rest, South Carolina, died on June 20, 2012, in Khowst province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire and an improvised explosive device.
He was assigned to the 133rd Military Police Company, 51st Military Police Battalion, Florence, South Carolina.

Matthew was known as "Brad" to his family and friends. He attended Travelers Rest High School.
Friends describe Brad as a man who was always there to help and who would give you the shirt off his back.
Military comrades describe Brad as a bright and shining light, who was always there to help and who had a sense of humor.
Brad is survived by many loving friends and relatives, including his wife and young son.
