Sam Mercouriou

Pvt. Sammuel “Sam” M. Mercouriou, age 18, died on December 8, 2011, at Fort Benning, Georgia.

He was involved in a rifle range training exercise at the base and apparently shot himself intentionally. This is unconfirmed.

Sam was a member of the Army’s D Company, 1st Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, 198th Infantry Brigade.

Sam was born in Middletown. He attended schools locally in East Windsor before moving to Suffield and graduating from Suffield High School Class of 2011, and shortly after high school Sam enlisted in the Connecticut Army National Guard.

Raphael, Archangel of Healing,
ask God to take Sam into Heaven.
Sam planned to go on to college to become an English teacher, but his true ambition was to become a writer. Sam was such a voracious reader who also enjoyed writing and in high school took four years of Latin to better himself as a writer. He enjoyed Magic: The Gathering and participated in several tournaments, but most of all Sam loved the time he spent camping and fishing with his family.

Sam is survived by his mother, Jody (Taylor) Hunt and her husband, David, of Suffield; his father, Savvas Mercouriou of Willimantic; his two sisters, Kelly Munroe and her husband Geoffrey of East Windsor, and Shannon Todaro and her husband John of Wethersfield. He is also survived his maternal grandparents Joseph and Jacqueline Taylor of East Windsor; his paternal grandmother Irene Mercouriou of Newington, an uncle Jim Taylor and his wife Susie of Broad Brook; many cousins and friends; his former Latin Teacher Gail Katz; and his four legged buddies Stella and Ray.

Let us pray to God the Father, Jesus, all of the saints and all of the angels that Sam Mercouriou is in heaven. Let us pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen
