He was a Sergeant with the Bismarck Police Department, who was responding to a domestic disturbance call, in which a man was threatening a woman with a knife. As Bismarck police officers approached the address of the assault, Steve was shot and killed by a man sitting inside a van at the location.

Police officials described Steve as being "giant in stature" but said he was known for his "kind and gentle disposition and selfless service to others."
Steve had 32 years of service.
Steve is the married father of three children.
