Michael Wilson - Law Enforcement - Florida

Corporal Mike Wilson, age 42, died in the line of duty on August 5, 2013, in Port Charlotte, Florida.

Mike was a member of the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office. He had 20 years of service.

At about 8:08 p.m., Mike and other officers were responding to a domestic violence call at an apartment complex in Port Charlotte.

The call involved a man in a physical fight with his wife and son. As Corporal Wilson walked up to the stairs to the apartment the male subject emerged and opened fire from the second floor landing, firing downward and striking Corporal Wilson in the chest above his vest.

The suspect, Jay Vanko, age 49, then committed suicide.

Mike had worked in many sections of the Department.  He had started his career working in the jail.  He had served in the narcotics unit; as a school resource officer; on street crimes; and currently as the road patrol supervisor for District 4.  

Police Officials stated that Mike will be greatly missed.  He is described as unique, a one-of-a-kind officer, who was very experienced in police work. He was known for his good natured personality and his infectious smile. 

Mike is survived by many loving friends and relatives including his wife, Joanne, and his children - Emily, Tyler and Brandon.
