Eric Smith - Law Enforcement - Mississippi

Detective Eric Smith, age 40, died in the line of duty on April 4, 2013, in Jackson, Mississippi.

Eric was a member of the Jackson Police Department. He had nearly 20 years of service.

Eric was interviewing Jeremy Powell, age 23, inside the Jackson Police Department's headquarters building when the suspect attacked Eric inside of the interview room. Jeremy Powell disarmed Detective Smith and fatally shot him before turning the gun on himself.

Eric was assigned to the Robbery-Homicide Division.

Police officials describe him as physically fit and a talented officer. He had been praised for his work in numerous high-profile murder investigations.

Others describe him as intelligent, analytical and self-motivated. He loved his family and often volunteered at his kids' school events.

He was also a huge fan of the New Orleans Saints Football team.

Eric is survived by many loving friends and relatives including his twin brother; his wife, Eneke, who also serves with the Jackson Police Department; and his sons, Eric Jr. and Quentin.
