Mike was shot and killed as he and other detectives attempted to serve warrants on a man in an apartment complex in Pearl, Mississippi, at 11:15 am.
The man was wanted for sexual battery of a minor and possession of child pornography. After entering the apartment the detectives located the man hiding in a bathtub. As the man resisted arrest, the officers attempted to use a taser on him. He opened fire on the officers, striking Investigator Walter in the face and wounding two other officers. One of the wounded officers was able to return fire and killed the subject.
Michael, Archangel, Patron Saint of the Police, pray for Mike |
All three officers were transported to University of Mississippi Medical Center, where Michael Walter succumbed to his wounds.
He was hired by the Pearl Police Department in February of 2009 as a patrol officer. He was promoted in October 2010 to an investigator.
Mike had played professional baseball for the Houston Astros from 1993 to 2000.
Police Officials stated that Mike was passionate about his family, law enforcement and professional baseball. It was also stated that Mike was a beacon of sunshine. Nothing but kind words for all. Seldom did a smile leave his face and his smiles were never bigger than when he would speak of his wife and daughter.
Mike is survived by many loving friends and relatives including his parents; his wife, Jeanne; and his daughter, Bailey, age 11.
Pray for all who die in the line of duty.
Let us pray that Michael Walter is in heaven. Let us pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
