Douglas Bean - Firefighter - Alabama

Firefighter Douglas Bean, age 29, died on May 6, 2012, in Madison, South Dakota.

Douglas was a member of the Tuscaloosa Fire and Rescue Service, in Alabama. He had worked with the Department as a firefighter/paramedic since 2008.

He was known as "PJ" to his friends.

Douglas was visiting relatives in Madison, South Dakota. He and friends were crossing a flooded creek when he drowned. It rained about 6 inches in a short amount of time, flooding the creek and several homes. He and some other people were going to walk across, and he lost his footing and was swept away.

Saint Florian, Patron
Saint of Firefighters,
pray for PJ
Douglas had moved from Alaska to Tuscaloosa to receive paramedic training at the Alabama Fire College and worked with Northstar EMS before being hired by the city.

He received a Lifesaving Award in 2009 after he and his partner, Beau Gunter, resuscitated a heart attack victim. His unit received a unit citation for exemplary teamwork while responding to a heart attack victim at Academy Sports in 2011.

Fire Department officials stated that he always conducted himself in a way that would make his family proud and their department proud. He is also described as a very knowledgeable and skillful paramedic, who was fit and bright. He was well-liked by all of the firefighters who worked with him.

Douglas is survived by many loving friends and relatives, including his father, Douglas Bean Sr.

Pray for all who are swept away in floods. They are here one moment and gone the next.

Let us pray that Douglas Bean is in heaven. Let us pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
