Carl Koontz - Deputy Sheriff Fatality - Indiana

Carl Koontz
Deputy Sheriff Carl Koontz, age 27, died in the line of duty on March 20, 2016, at a hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Deputy Sheriff Koontz was a member of the Howard County Sheriff's Office. He had 2 years of service.

Carl and several other deputies were looking for a male subject under warrant in connection with a narcotics drug case. Just after midnight, they approached a house trailer in Russiaville and attempted to enter. A male subject opened fire, shooting Carl and Sgt. Jordan Buckley.

Carl and Jordan were rushed to a hospital in Indianapolis where, tragically, Carl died of his injuries.

Several hours later, a SWAT team found the male shooter, Evan Dorsey, age 25, dead inside of the trailer. Sgt. Buckley, who was wounded, has been released from the hospital. Evan Dorsey had a long history of petty crimes and convictions, most of them drug-related.

A funding site has been set up to help Carl's family with expenses.

Friends describe Carl as a caring young man with a big heart. He was a proud father. He was helpful to others and was generous in spirit.
