He was a member of the New York State Police. He had 7 years of service. He was assigned to Troop F.
Over two years earlier, on May 9, 2011, Winston had responded to the scene of a plane crash in Wawayanda, New York. He was one of the first units to arrive at the scene.
Two small planes had collided. During the emergency, he fell on a piece of equipment and suffered internal injuries and internal bleeding in his abdomen. Despite the injuries, he continued his efforts to try to free the two pilots from the wreckage. Sadly, both pilots died at the scene.
Winston worked at the scene for 6 hours. Later it was determined that he had suffered very severe injuries.
He underwent several surgeries over the following two years but succumbed as a result of the injuries and complications on July 24th, 2013.
Police comrades stated that Winston always gave 110 percent to whatever he was doing. He was a good Trooper.
Others describe him as a man with a positive attitude who loved doing what he did.
Winston Martindale was also a U.S. Army veteran.
