Stephen New - U.S. Military

Sgt. Stephen M. New, age 29, of Bartlett, Tennessee, died on July 28, 2013, in Bagram, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his unit was attacked by small arms fire in the Sarobi District of Kabul Province, Afghanistan.

He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Jackson, Mississippi.

Stephen had attended Bolton High School. He joined the Army in 2003 as a health care specialist. He served at Fort Benning, Georgia, until leaving active duty in 2005.

In 2009, he joined the Mississippi National Guard and was assigned to a Special Forces Group (Airborne) in Jackson, Mississippi. In 2011 he attended a Special Forces Assessment and Selection and was chosen to become a Special Forces medical sergeant. He completed the Special Forces qualification course last year.

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, Afghan Campaign Medal, NATO Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Parachutist Badge and the Special Forces Tab.

He was a member of the Ellendale Baptist Church.

Friends said that he was a man of faith who made a huge impression on others. He is

Stephen is survived by many loving friends and relatives.

Thank you for serving, Stephen.

Pray without ceasing unto God for an end to this war in Afghanistan. It is enough. We are sick with grief for men like Stephen.

Pray that Stephen is in heaven. Pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.

I can't believe this is true. You had such a kind heart and spirit. The short time we had together was some of the best of my life. I'm going to miss you and find peace in knowing God has you now. RIP Stephen, you'll always be my hero.
