Jairo Mora Sandoval |
Jairo was a conservationist and a sea turtle biologist working to protect nesting sea turtles from poaching and other threats on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast near Limón, an area that has seen an increase in sea turtle poaching.
This beach is also a heavy drug dealing location and drug dealers use it as a drop off point for large quantities of drugs entering Costa Rica.
Jairo was on sea turtle patrol with four foreign women volunteers when he was ambushed by at least five masked men. The women escaped.
Jairo's murder was execution-style. His body was found beaten, with his hands tied behind his back and a gunshot wound to the head.
He worked with the nonprofit group Widecast, which works to protect turtle nests from poachers. It was reported that he was a committed Costa Rican environmentalist who was sounding the alarms about threats received from anti-wildlife criminal groups and drug traffickers. He had recently spoken out to the media and on social media about the lack of government support for the conservationists on this beach.
