Francis Phillips IV - U.S. Military

Staff Sgt. Francis G. Phillips IV, age 28, of Meridian, New York, died on May 4, 2013, in Maiwand, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when his vehicle struck an enemy improvised explosive device.

He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Fort Bliss, Texas.

He was born in Oceanside, California. He enlisted in the Army in 2004 and trained at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Francis had previously deployed to Iraq in 2005 and to Afghanistan in both 2007 and 2009.

His awards included the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal with Valor, the Army Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster and numerous other awards.

Family members describe him as a good boy who was never any trouble to his parents.

He died doing what he loved. He is their American hero.

Francis is survived by many loving friends and relatives including his parents; his grandfather; his wife and 4 year old daughter.
