David Sonka - U.S. Military

Cpl. David M. Sonka, age 23, of Parker, Colorado, died on May 4, 2013, while conducting combat operations in Farah province, Afghanistan.

He was assigned to 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

It has been reported that David's death was the result of an "insider attack", in which Afghan military or police turn on NATO forces, killing them. This incident is under investigation. 

David graduated from Chaparral High School in 2008.  He joined the Marines in August of 2008. 

He attended Military Police School in Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. Upon graduation he attended the Military Working Dog Handler Basic Course in Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.

His dog, Flex, was also killed in the attack.

David's personal decorations include a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal and a Combat Action Ribbon.

Family members describe David as a great man who is their hero. They are proud of his service to his country.

Friends describe David as a hard worker who was dedicated to everything he put his mind to.

David is survived by many loving friends and relatives including his wife, Torey.
