On March 8, 2013, she was walking across SW 11 Street just west of LeJeune Road from her home to her car when she was struck by a vehicle. The driver left the scene of the crime.
Melita was rushed to the hospital but died 2 days later.

Melita was a student at Florida International University. University Officials stated that Melita was a bright doctoral student with a promising future. She used her analytical and computer skills to do important research for the benefit of people suffering from lung disease. She was driven, dedicated and curious about the world.
Melita was from Serbia, was a world-traveler and spoke several languages.

Family members describe her as brilliant and cultured. They are deeply grieving her loss.
Melita is survived by many loving friends and relatives including her parents, who flew in from Serbia; and her sister, Natasha.
Pray for all who die by misadventure. They are with us one moment and gone the next. Amen.
