Shawn Smiley - Law Enforcement - Georgia

Police Officer Shawn Smiley, age 40, of Lithonia, Georgia, died in the line of duty on November 3, 2012, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Shawn was a member of the Atlanta Police Department. He had 2 years of service. He had been assigned as a Tactical Flight Officer in the Air Unit. He previously served in the Department’s Zone 2 precinct.

He was the flight officer in a helicopter, searching for a missing 9 year old boy in an area approximately 4 miles west of downtown Atlanta.

At about 10:30 p.m., the helicopter crashed and exploded, killing Shawn and another officer. 

The missing boy was found wandering the streets a few hours later. 

Police officials stated that Shawn died honorably serving the citizens and the Police Department.

Shawn is survived by many loving friends and relatives including his wife and three children - ages 5, 7 and 9.

Let us pray that Shawn Smiley is in heaven. Let us pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
