James Nehl

Capt. James D. Nehl, age 37, of Gardiner, Oregon, died on November 9, 2012, in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan, from small arms fire while on patrol during combat operations.

He was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas. 

James graduated from Reedsport High School.

James joined the Army in 2007. This was his first deployment to Afghanistan. He also previously deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Friends stated that he James wanted to be a soldier all along. He is described as quiet and sincere and disciplined. He liked to hunt and fish. He was into athletics in High School. 

Other friends stated that he had a quiet confidence and was a friend to everyone. He was known as a good man. 

James is survived by many loving friends and relatives.
