He was assigned to 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
The cause of his death is under investigation.
Alex attended Richfield Springs High School and later Herkimer County Community College. High School officials describe him as a good kid with a sense of humor.
He enlisted in the Marines in 2009. He was on his second deployment to Afghanistan. He had only been there for 2 weeks this time.
Alex has received three Purple Hearts for his service.

Family members describe him as a good kid, who liked to hunt, fish and snowmobile. He was humorous and helpful.
Alex is survived by many loving friends and relatives including his grandmother, Rose Shipman and his wife, Amber Grant.
Thank you for serving, Alex.
Pray for the 21 year olds who die in the service of their country. Yesterday, they were just boys.
