Anthony Polk - Firefighter - Arizona

Firefighter Anthony Polk, age 31, of Yuma, Arizona, died in the line of duty on June 8, 2012, near Sells, Arizona.

Anthony was a fire operations and fuels technician for the Department of the Interior's Bureau of Indian Affairs at the Fort Yuma Agency. He was a wildland fire engine boss during his final assignment.

He died when his wildland fire engine rolled over in rough terrain at 8 a.m. as he and his crew were traveling along Federal Route 19 to battle the Montezuma Fire, located 20 miles southeast of Sells, Arizona. The Montezuma Fire is on the Baboquivari Mountain Range in the Tohono O'odham Nation west of Tucson.

Anthony was a member of the Quechan/San Carolos Apache Indian Tribe.  

A graduate of San Pasqual High School, Anthony lived in Yuma most of his life surrounded by an extensive family. After graduating, he attended the Fort Yuma Academy for Firefighters.

Friends stated that Anthony devoted his life to assuring the safety of others before himself and that he was a teacher among his co-workers.  He is described as a dedicated firefighter.

Anthony is survived by many loving friends and relatives, including his mother, Ramona Villa and his five year old daughter.

Pray for all who die in the line of duty.
