Helicopters - the Wobbly and Deadly Dragonflies

Every time I post a helicopter-related death on this blog, I wonder why we even have helicopters at all.

Of course, the answer is that they are the only reasonably priced aircraft that can hover and that can vertically land in precarious locations. Harrier jets can hover, but they cost $30 million each.

Helicopters are used extensively by the military, by search and rescue operations, by the Police, by logging operations, by the tourism industry, and by newscasters. They are convenient and get you to impossible locations that an airplane could never reach. You don't need an airport to land a helicopter. You can land one in your backyard.

However....It is a well known fact that helicopters are the most unstable of aircraft. They are the wobbly and deadly dragonflies of the aviation industry. They serve a useful purpose but at great cost in human terms and are about as predictable as a dragonfly.

Helicopters look like dragonflies and are as predictable as one
In the past two years, on this website, the helicopter related deaths of 89 men and one women have been documented here. Most of these men and the woman were military personnel from various NATO countries. Some of them were Search and Rescue personnel. All of them died in horribly violent helicopter crashes.

God save all who ride in helicopters - their lives hang by a thread. Amen.
