Michael W. Newton

Capt. Michael W. Newton, age 30, of Newport News, Virginia, died on June 11, 2011, at Faryab province, Afghanistan,of injuries suffered in a non-combat related incident.

He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 84th Field Artillery Regiment, 170th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Baumholder, Germany.

Michael graduated from Denbigh High School in 1999 and Virginia Military Institute in 2003. He joined the Army July 6, 2004 and joined his unit Dec. 14, 2009. He deployed to Afghanistan with his unit in Feb. 2011.

His previous deployments include two tours in Iraq; February 2006 to September 2006; October 2008 to October 2009. He had also served in South Korea.

Family members stated that Michael wanted to be a soldier since he was 4 years old.  Friends of the family described him as "determined".

Let us pray to God the Father, Jesus, all of the saints and all of the angels that Michael W. Newton is in heaven. Let us pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
