Sgt. Joshua D. Powell, age 28, of Quitman, Texas, died on June 4, 2011, in Laghman province, Afghanistan, when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.
He was assigned to the 793rd Military Police Battalion, 3rd Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska.
Joshua is the son of Quitman residents Ray and Brenda Powell. He was a 2001 graduate of Quitman High School.

Joshua D. Powell is the second young man with this name to have died in Afghanistan in the past 9 months. The other Joshua D. Powell was Staff Sgt. Joshua D. Powell, age 25, of Pleasant Plains, Illinois, who died in a helicopter crash on Sept. 21, 2010, in Zabul province.
God help us all.
Let us pray to God the Father, Jesus, all of the saints and all of the angels that Joshua D. Powell is in heaven. Let us pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
