Chris Lawton |
Officer Lawton was a reserve officer with the Zachary Police Department. He worked full-time as a Deputy Fire Chief for the Zachary Fire Department.
Zachary is a city of just under 15,000 located about 16 miles north of Baton Rouge.
Chris and another officer were attempting to serve a warrant on a man accused of beating his girlfriend. The male subject was spotted in a pick-up truck in Baker, Louisiana. The officers approached the vehicle and the driver pulled away driving directly into Chris.
Chris was rushed to a local hospital where, tragically, he succumbed to his injuries.
The driver of the pick-up truck was arrested and has been charged with several crimes including first degree murder. He has a lengthy prior criminal history.
Chris joined the Fire Department in March of 1996 as a volunteer and then became a full-time firefighter in March of 1998. He had been a deputy chief for the last few years and was an arson investigator.
Chris became a volunteer reserve police officer with the Zachary Police Department in 2008, where he worked part-time and without pay for the last decade.
The members of the Zachary Police and Fire Departments are in mourning over the death of their brother. Chris was a dedicated and professional firefighter. He was a hard worker, a leader and a mentor to others. He loved his family. He will be forever remembered as a hero.
Chris's loved ones are devastated over his sudden and tragic death. He was loved. He did his best. He will be forever mourned.
Chris is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his wife, Shannon; his daugher, Claire, and his son, Marshall.
Thank you for your service to the community, Chris.
Pray for all who die in the line of duty.
Pray for all who die suddenly. They are with us one moment and are gone before we can say goodbye.
God save us from the Lost Ones who bring death to others. Amen.
Pray that Chris is in Heaven. Pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
