Peter McKenna Jr. - Military Fatality - Afghanistan

Master Sgt. Peter A. McKenna Jr., age 35, of Bristol, Rhode Island, died on August 8, 2015, in Kabul, Afghanistan.

He was mortally wounded when Camp Integrity near the Kabul airport came under major attack by Taliban insurgents. 

Master Sgt. McKenna was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group, Eglin Air Force Base, Florida.

Peter attended Mt. Hope High School in Bristol.  He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Strategic Studies from Norwich University in 2015.

Peter enlisted in July of 1998 as an infantryman. He completed Special Forces Qualification Courses in 2002 and was assigned to the 7th Special Forces Group as a communications sergeant in May of 2003.

Peter served five tours of duty in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. 

Peter's military awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with V device, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the NATO medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Master Free Fall Parachutist Badge, the Master Parachutist Badge, the Air Assault Badge and the Special Forces Tab.

Peter was honored at his home town's annual Fourth of July parade this summer.

Friends described Peter as confident and charming.

Peter's military comrades are in mourning over the death of their young brother who died in the service of his country.

Peter's family members are devastated by his sudden and tragic death. He is their hero. He did his best. He will be forever mourned.

Peter is survived by many loving comrades, friends and relatives including his parents, Peter and Carol McKenna.

Thank you for serving, Peter.

Pray without ceasing unto God for an end to this war in Afghanistan. It is enough. We are sick with grief for men like Peter.

Pray that Peter is in heaven. Pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
