Aaron Toppen

Infantryman Aaron Toppen, age 19, of Mokena, Illinois, died on June 9, 2014, in Zabul Province, Afghanistan.

Afghan and international forces had carried out a joint operation against Taliban fighters on June 9, 2014. At the end of the day, the forces returned to their base, where at about 9 p.m. they came under fire from Taliban rockets. Airstrikes against the Taliban were undertaken which mistakenly hit U.S. and Afghan troops, killing Aaron and four other U.S. soldiers, one Afghan interpreter and one Afghan soldier.

Aaron had graduated from Lincoln-Way East High School in Frankfort, Illinois, in 2013. He enlisted in July of 2013 and trained at Fort Benning, Georgia. In November of 2013, he reported to the 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team at Fort Carson, Colorado.

Aaron left for Afghanistan in March of 2014.

He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with campaign star, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon and the NATO Medal.

Family members stated that ever since he was a young boy, Aaron had wanted to join the military. He came from a proud military family. His grandfathers had both served. His family is proud of his service.

outdoors. He was also into cars and motorcyles. He loved his family and cared about his friends. He would give the shirt off his back to anyone who needed it more than him.

Still others describe Aaron as polite, humble and a kind hearted soul. After he completed his military service, he was thinking about a career in law enforcement.

Aaron's family members are devastated by his sudden and tragic death. He will be forever mourned.

Aaron is survived by many loving comrades, friends and relatives including his mother Pam Toppen; and his two siblings.

Aaron was predeceased by his father, Ronald, who died on February 7, 2014. Aaron was always in his father's mind. This family has seen so much grief in such a short time.  God help them.

Thank you for serving, Aaron. 

Pray for all teenagers who die in War. Yesterday, they were just boys.

Pray without ceasing unto God for an end to this war in Afghanistan. It is enough. We are sick with grief for men like Aaron. 

Pray that Aaron is in heaven. Pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
