Michael Garrett - Firefighter - West Virginia

Firefighter Michael Dale Garrett, age 28, died in the line of duty on February 1, 2014, in Summit Park, West Virginia.

Michael was a volunteer member of the Nutter Fort Fire Department.

The Fire Department responded when a cell phone tower fell in Summit Park. A number of construction workers were either killed or injured in the collapse. Michael was helping to rescue a victim when a second tower fell upon him. Michael was transported to a local hospital where he died of his injuries.

Many of Michael's friends and loved ones called him Mikey.

Michael attended South Harrison High School, Alderson-Broaddus College and was currently attending Fairmont State University where he was scheduled to graduate in May of 2014 with an associate’s degree in Emergency Services.

The Fire Department is in mourning over the death of their brother.

Family members stated that Michael died doing what he loved to do which was helping others. He had a great sense of humor, was friendly to all and was passionate about his work.

Friends describe him as fun to be with, kind, dedicated and helpful to those in need. 

Michael is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his parents, Dale and Faith Garrett; his brother, Justin; his sisters, Julie, Anna and Katie; and his best friend, Aaron Cutright. 

Thank you for your service to the public, Michael. 

Pray for all who die in the line of duty.

Pray for all who die while coming to the aid of others. They are the true heroes of this world. Amen.

Pray that Michael is in heaven. Pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
