Tom Smith - Law Enforcement - California

Detective Sergeant Tom Smith, age 42, of San Ramon, died in the line of duty on January 21, 2014, at the Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, California.

Tom was a member of the Bay Area Rapid Transit Police Department. He had 20 years of service.

On January 21, 2014, Tom and other officers were conducting a probation check and warrant service at an apartment in Dublin, California, at approximately 1:00 pm. The subject they were searching for was wanted for several robberies on Bay Area Rapid Transit property.

The officers entered the unlocked apartment and somehow in the search for the suspect a round was discharged striking Officer Smith. He was transported to the medical center where he succumbed to his injuries.

The subject is in custody.

Tom comes from a law enforcement family.  His wife is a K-9 officer with BART police
Michael, Archangel, Patron Saint of the Police,
pray for Tom and for those who have lost him
and his two brothers are officers at other Bay Area departments.

Tom is described as a devoted father to his daughter. 

The Bay Area Rapid Transit Police Department is in mourning over the death of their brother.

Tom is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his wife and his 6 year old daughter.

Pray that Tom is in heaven. Pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.

Pray for the Officer who accidentally shot Tom.  He too is suffering.  Amen.
