Ken Copeland |
Officer Copeland was a member of the San Marcos Police Department. He had 19 years of service.
San Marcos has a population of 62,000 and is located 50 miles northeast of San Antonio, Texas.
Just before 2:30 p.m., Ken and other officers were attempting to serve a warrant on a man who was wanted on a crime of violence. As the officers approached the man's home in a city neighbourhood, the male suspect opened fire, striking Ken multiple times.
Ken was rushed to a local hospital where, tragically, he succumbed to his wounds.
The shooter surrendered after a brief standoff with members of the regional SWAT Team.
Ken was working on his day off when he died. He often did this for several reasons - to support his family and to help out the police department when they were short-handed. He also worked with the Cub Scouts program at a local elementary school and worked security at a local church.
A funding site has been set up to help Ken's family with expenses.
Michael, Patron Saint of the Police, pray for Ken and for those who have lost him. |
