Gary Michael |
Officer Michael was a member of the Clinton Police Department. He had 1 year of service.
Clinton is a city of about 9,000, located 75 miles southeast of Kansas City, Missouri.
Just before 11:00 p.m., Gary was conducting a traffic stop near a city intersection. He was checking for a suspected registration violation. The driver exited the vehicle and shot Gary.
Gary was able to return fire and wounded the suspect, Ian McCarthy, age 39, who then drove off but crashed several blocks away. He fled that scene on foot but was arrested two days later.
Gary graduated from Clinton High and then joined the U.S. Army. He served for about five years as a military police officer. He was stationed in Germany and Egypt.
Michael, Patron Saint of the Police, pray for Gary and for those who have lost him. |
Friends describe Gary as a man who smiled easily and who was quick-witted. He was kind in spirit. He was one of the good guys.
The members of the Clinton Police Department are in mourning over the death of their brother. Gary had always wanted to be a police officer. He was a professional who gave his life in the service of his community. He will be forever remembered.
Gary's loved ones are devastated by his sudden and tragic death. He was loved. He did his best. He will be forever mourned.
Gary is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his wife, Cindy.
