Rio Rancho is a city of over 90,000 and is part of the Albuquerque Metropolitan area.
Greg Benner was nicknamed "Nigel" by many of his friends.
Greg was just about at the end of his shift and was making a traffic stop on a city street at approximately 8:15 pm. Two occupants of the vehicle, a man and a woman, fled the scene and Greg pursued them for a short distance when one of the subjects opened fire, striking Greg. The vehicle fled again.
Greg was rushed to a nearby hospital where tragically he died of his injuries.
One of the suspects was arrested later in the night and one still remains at large.

Friends stated that Greg deeply loved his wife, Julie. He had always said that he was lucky to have married her. He was an avid cyclist. He was fun-loving and was the first to step up to help you if you needed help.
The Rio Rancho Police Department is in mourning over the death of their brother. Greg was well-liked and well-respected by his comrades. He was hardworking, loyal and dedicated to helping his community. He will be forever remembered.
Greg's loved ones are devastated over his sudden and tragic death. He did his best. He will be forever mourned.
Greg is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his wife, Julie; his 2 adult children and 3 adult step-children.
