Adam Brunt - a firefighter trainee died in a river in Ontario, Canada

Adam Brunt and Jenna
Adam Brunt, age 30, died on February 8, 2015, at a hospital in Ontario, Canada.

Adam was from Bowmanville, Ontario.

In the afternoon of February 8, 2015, Adam was training to become a firefighter.  He was performing an ice and water rescue exercise in order to get his certification for that task. This took place on the Saugeen River near Hanover, Ontario.

Suddenly, Adam was swept away by a strong current and went under the ice.  He was under the ice for 15 minutes before his body was recovered.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital where tragically he passed away after extreme efforts made by medical staff to revive him.

Adam was enrolled at Durham College in Oshawa where he was enrolled in the pre-service firefighter program.

The ice and water rescue exercise that resulted in Adam's death was being conducted by a private company. This firm has no affiliation with Durham College and was an extra-curricular course.

Adam was undergoing this exercise with 11 other students and an instructor from the

private firm.

Durham College has stated that most students in this program choose to supplement their class instruction with practical experience, acquired from external trainers.

It is time that the Durham College re-examine the issue of ice and water rescue training by outside sources with a view to recommending that students not participate in extra curricular courses that may put their lives in danger. These young men and women are not experienced firefighters. They are students only.

Adam's friends and loved ones are devastated over his tragic death. They are in shock. His girlfriend, Jenna, describes him as the love of her life.  Oceans of tears will be shed for this young man. He will be forever mourned.

Adam is survived by many loving friends and family members.

Pray for all who die by misadventure.  They are with us one moment and are gone before we can say goodbye.

Pray that Adam is in heaven. Pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
