Charles Severance was found dead in the family home. The dismembered remains of Shirley Severance were found in Sterling, Colorado and in Lorenzo, Nebraska.
Neighbors describe the couple as reasonably happy, elderly and just trying to live out their lives.
Brendan Lee Johnson, age 19, and his girlfriend, Cassandra Ann Rieb, age 18, have been arrested in connection with these vile murders. They have been charged with first degree murder and robbery.
Brendan Lee Johnson is the grandson of Charles and Shirley Severance.

Some news reports state that Brendan Johnson lived with his grandparents, but this is undetermined as of this posting.
It has been reported that Brendan and Cassandra planned to smother Charles and Shirley while they were asleep, clean $20,000. out of their bank account and take over their house.
All murder is wicked but it is particularly so when you are murdered by your own flesh and blood for money.
Brendan Johnson and Cassandra Rieb are innocent until proven guilty. But if they are guilty, they will never see the light of day. They will spend the rest of their lives in prison. When you are 18 or 19 years old, a life sentence lasts a long, long time.
We don't know the interpersonal dynamic of this particular extended family but where
are the parents of Brendan Johnson?
Too often in today's society, people give birth to kids, and then dump them on the grandparents to look after. This is often because the parents are drunk, doped up, unemployed, penniless, partying and don't give a shit. They pump out kids for other family members to look after. This is called "parental irresponsibility" and it is prevalent.
Charles and Shirley are survived by many loving friends and family members.
Pray for all who die at the hands of their loved ones. You don't need enemies if your own family will murder you.

We received an email from a person who presumably is a relative of someone in Brendan Lee Johnson’s family. This person told us that we should be ashamed for our hideous article and for suggesting that Brendan Lee Johnson was “dumped” on his grandparents. They also stated that Brendan Lee Johnson’s parents love him and are struggling to get on with their lives despite his bad choices.
Bad choices, indeed. Yes…strangling your grandparents is a very bad choice.
Actually, every time we do a memorial for someone murdered, we get emails from the family of the accused murderer, claiming that their son, brother, cousin or father is innocent and that it is all a big misunderstanding. Seriously… Do you all think that anyone believes this other than you?
Brendan Lee Johnson’s parents may not have dumped him on his grandparents. However, did they not notice over the years that he was becoming psychotic, irrational, out-of-scope?
Somehow all of this becomes an issue about the accused and not about the victims.
We are sorry for Charles and Shirley Severance who looked into the eyes of someone who was strangling them and perhaps saw that this person was their own grandson.
God help them.
