Other bystanders and the local Fire Rescue Department were also instrumental in saving two people from drowning.
Brian was bicycling along the Bronx River Parkway when he heard a loud crash. A car had plunged into the waterway. The Bronx River is not a raging river, but it is deep enough to drown you. It is also muddy and murky. You can't see what you're dealing with if a vehicle is underwater.
The Good Samaritan comes to the aid of strangers, selflessly. |
The car had landed upside down in the water. The bystanders, including Brian, tried to break the vehicle's windows using rocks and sticks. They were eventually able to pry the driver's side door open.
Brian, who could not see a thing, was able to pull the driver out of the car and to safety. A young woman was still trapped in the passenger seat. Firefighters and bystanders including Brian were able with great difficulty to turn the car right side up. The woman was saved.
Evan Ypsilanti, age 32, of Bronxville and Susan George, age 19, of Yonkers, were hospitalized after this near death experience. They will be forever grateful to Brian Mandell, the Firefighters and to the other bystanders who came to their rescue.
Brian says that he is no hero. He is however, a Good Samaritan, who stepped up to the plate in an emergency and helped save lives.
God bless Brian. God knows we need more men like him in this world.
