Monica Spear and Thomas Berry - killed by thieves on a highway in Venezuela

Monica Spear, age 29, and Thomas Berry, age 39, died on January 6, 2014, on a highway in Venezuela.

At about 10:30 p.m., this couple was shot and killed and their 5 year old daughter was wounded. They were murdered by thieves. 

They died on a highway between Puerto Cabello, the country's main port, and the provincial capital of Valencia. They were returning from a trip to Caracas.

Monica was a former "Miss Venezuela" and was a current soap opera star. Thomas Berry was her ex-husband. They were not together as a couple but did things together for the sake of their child. They were married in 2008 and divorced in 2013

These murders follow a pattern in Venezuela of late-night assaults carried out by the thieves disabling cars and attacking the occupants for money.

Venezuela has a very high murder rate and Venezuelans have a tendency to stay home after dark because their own citizens may kill them.

Monica Spear was crowned Miss Venezuela in 2004 and was in fifth place in the Miss Universe pageant in 2005.

Four of five members of a gang have been arrested in connection with these murders.

Some of them are only 15. These morons, if convicted, will spend the rest of their lives in jail.

Family members describe Monica as a sweet young woman who was trying to improve her life. Friends said that she had great drive and determination.

Thomas is described as a lively and loving man.

Monica and Thomas are survived by many loving friends and relatives who will forever miss them. Oceans of tears will be shed for Monica and for Thomas.

God save us from the thieves. They are killing us, Father.
