Francisco Camacho Melendez - a Good Samaritan who died in San Pedro, California

Francisco Camacho Melendez, age 36, of Compton, died on November 30, 2013, at Cabrillo Beach breakwater, San Pedro, California.

Francisco was known as Pancho to his family and friends.

After 6:00 a.m., he was one of several people who jumped into the water to save a 14 year old boy and a 49 year old man who had been swept away by high waves.

The two had been fishing from the breakwater, which is a popular gathering spot for fishing and for taking photos. The rock jetty separates the Port of Los Angeles from the ocean and can sometimes be washed over by wakes from passing ships or large swells from distant storms.

The 49-year-old man made his way out of the water on his own. The 14-year-old was pulled from the water by rescue divers and transported to a hospital.

Francisco was pulled from the water but had no pulse. Rescuers performed CPR as they transported him to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact the Port Police at 310-732-
